Freedom Reads
Description
Freedom Reads is a large-scale collaborative dedicated to promoting literacy inside correctional facilities and providing books to individuals. Their mission is use literacy and reading as a catalyst for permanent behavioral changes, educational pursuits and character building among incarcerated individuals. They believe strongly in the power of diverse and accessible libraries inside prisons. Freedom Reads maintains several programs to help target the unique needs of every individual. The Literary Ambassadors program connects incarcerated individuals directly with professional writers for workshops, talks and the opportunity to see concrete examples of what storytelling can do for individuals. The Book Circles program coordinates and delivers a single book to facilities across the nation, allowing incarcerated individuals from diverse backgrounds and in numerous states to engage with a common piece of literature through conversation and shared inquiry. Freedom Reads also maintains Freedom Library, a program which helps construct and maintain libraries inside correctional facilities across the nation.
