New York State Defenders Association Public Defense Backup Center

Description

New York State Defenders Association Public Defense Backup Center is part of the New York State Defenders Association nonprofit. The Defense Backup Center collects and organizes vital information related to legal precedent and legislation. The function of the organization is to provide data and support for new legislation and policies that best serve the community, such as viable alternatives to incarceration and the assignment of legal counsel fees. While the Defense Backup Center does not directly serve the public, staff coordinate with county workers to develop training programs related to legal counsel and support for justice involved individuals, assess attorney certifications and performance criteria, analysis of public defense methodologies and ensure quick access to public defenders for individuals facing litigation. Most importantly, the office determines the effectiveness of the public defender program and recommends adjustments as necessary to maintain quality legal advice and defense for individuals regardless of income status.
