Gwinnett Justice & Administration Center Conviction Integrity Unit
Description
The Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center Conviction Integrity Unit investigates all claims of actual innocence. The unit is housed within the Gwinnett County District Attorney's office and is tasked with conducting a complete investigation into all official claims of innocence that meet the department's eligibility requirements. Individuals must be currently incarcerated within the Gwinnett County corrections system and have a conviction from the Gwinnett County Superior Court. They must also present evidence that is new to the case and supports their claims of innocence or demonstrate how new technology innovations allow for more thorough testing of existing evidence in the case. Individuals who successfully prove their innocence may be exonerated when the District Attorney finds due cause. While the Conviction Integrity Unit concerns itself primarily with claims of innocence, staff will investigate other claims of wrongful conviction and petitions that establish unduly harsh sentencing following a conviction in Gwinnett County Superior Court.
