Disability Rights New York
Description
Disability Rights New York offers legal counsel and advocacy for members of the New York community who face barriers to equity. The purpose of the organization is to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to the resources they require to live successful and independent lives. Staff advocate for individuals and collaborate with policymakers to influence more equitable legislation for all individuals with disabilities. Their mission is to empower adults and children with disabilities by advancing their rights and increasing access to community resources. Disability Rights New York participates in litigation that centers rights for individuals with disabilities, including recent cases regarding the provision of ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic and equal access to educational opportunities for State Island youth. Additionally, they operate a number of advocacy programs, each with a focus on specific disabilities. The Protection and Advocacy for Assistive Technology program, for example, offers litigation and assistance for individuals who are denied access to the assistive technologies required under constitutional law.
