Legislative Corrections Ombudsman is a division of the Michigan Legislative Council that investigates complaints of the Department of Corrections. The mission of the Ombudsman office is to ensure that the human and constitutional rights have all incarcerated individuals are protected at all times. Currently incarcerated individuals who believe that their rights have been violated, as well as those who have experienced abuse or discrimination during incarceration, may contact the office directly to request a formal investigation into claims. The Ombudsman office operates with a limited staff, and they must fully assess each claim to determine both its accuracy and its relevance to the mission of the office. Those cases that fall under the purview of the Ombudsman and demonstrate sufficient evidence of wrongdoing will result in a thorough investigation and, whenever necessary, recommendations for corrective action.
