Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights

The Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights is a nonprofit law office that stands with kids in the justice system no matter what. They provide holistic legal defense to address children’s needs inside and outside the courtroom. They also tackle the systemic issues that criminalize primarily poor, Black youth in the first place. Finally, they aim to keep kids out of a harmful system to thrive where they belong: at home, school, and in the communities. The office challenges laws and policies that systemically criminalize youth of color and poor youth. From the courthouse to the statehouse, they advocate for a Louisiana where children are supported in their community, not locked in jails and prisons. In addition, they provide specialized, no-cost legal representation to children in the justice system and adults who were sentenced as children. Furthermore, they provide each child with a holistic team–a lawyer, social worker, investigator, and youth advocate–to address the causes and consequences of an arrest.
