Masai Justice Project

Masai Justice Project

Description

The Masai Justice Project is a youth justice organization that works to provide alternatives to incarceration whenever possible. They operate through a hybrid model that mirrors teen court and focuses on restorative justice, community justice and collective accountability. One of the major benefits to the Masai Justice Project is that young adults can focus on restoration and avoid entering the criminal justice system at an early age. For youth who are facing charges related to delinquency or truancy, the Kankakaa County State's Attorney Juvenile Division may refer the individual to the Masai Justice Project. Public defenders and private attorneys may also seek participation in the project. Individuals must take responsibility for their actions and agree to adhere to the requirements laid out by a jury of their peers. Failure to do will likely result in the filing of charges with the State's Attorney and potential jail time in a youth facility.
