Open Books and The Prison Books Project
Description
The Prison Books Project is a program by Open Books, a nonprofit, volunteer-run bookstore located in Pensacola, Florida. Since founding the program in 2000, proceeds from book sales and donations have supported the Prison Book Project. Their mission is to provide free books to improve the lives of incarcerated individuals, provide educational resources, and reduce the likelihood of return to the prison system. The Prison Books Project serves over 2,000 incarcerated individuals by sending around 10,000 books each year to those in Florida prisons. These Florida prisons are one of the largest prison systems in the country and one sorely lacking in-house book collections. This organization believes that communities fare much better when justice impacted individuals return to society having had the opportunity to learn, grow, and mature. Incarcerated individuals interested in this program simply need to send The Prison Books Project a letter with their requests. Open Books and The Prison Books Project can be contacted directly for more information on their services.
