Description

Shelter House is a community based organization committed to addressing housing insecurity in the greater Iowa City area. Since 1983, Shelter House has offered safe housing and helped individuals improve the quality of their lives as they work to overcome homelessness. The organization started in an old home in Iowa City that was able to house 29 sleeping spaces including beds, couches, and mats on the floor. Today, Shelter House maintains a 70-bed emergency shelter, as well as four homes and an apartment building through which the organization offers more than 60 permanent supportive housing units. Staff focus on programs and support services that include: housing, employment, and mental health recovery which ultimately assists hundreds of adults, children, and families each year to get back on track for success. The organization strives to be a voice for systemic community reform through excellence in service, financial stewardship, and the curating of strong community partnerships.
