Summit County Conviction Integrity Unit

The Summit County Conviction Integrity Unit is dedicated to ensuring that all cases handled by the Summit County District Attorney result in justice. Their primary mission is to provide a complete and thorough investigation into all claims of innocence filed with the Summit County District Attorney's office. In order to receive a case review, individuals must demonstrate that they are currently incarcerated for a conviction handed down by the Summit County Superior court. Additionally, all petitions must include new and credible evidence that supports the claim of innocence. Individuals may also show how new scientific advancements allow for more thorough testing of evidence presented during the initial trial. However, the Conviction Integrity Unit cannot consider cases involving individuals who have been released from prison or those whose cases are currently under the jurisdiction of the Appellate Court. While the Conviction Integrity Unit most often investigates claims of innocence, they will occasionally look into other claims of wrongful conviction or excessive sentencing.
