Texas Department of Criminal Justice – State Counsel for Offenders
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice State Counsel for Offenders is a state sponsored legal services organization. The State Counsel for Offenders operates independent of the Department of Corrections and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to ensure fair and objective representation for clients. Low-income individuals who require legal services or representation in pending litigation while incarcerated may be eligible for assistance. Both currently incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals who are facing civil litigation may also be eligible for services. The office is qualified to provide support for individuals facing criminal charges while incarcerated, individuals facing deportation and civil cases which name the client. However, the office is not equipped to provide representation for capital punishment cases or cases involving civil rights. They also cannot offer legal representation or advice for individuals who are facing charges related to the violation of parole.
