The Equitas Project
The Equitas Project, an initiative of Mental Health Colorado, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to dismantling mental health from the criminal justice system. Since their foundation in 2013, The Equitas Project has focused on managing mental and behavioral health challenges on a broader scale through policy change on a national level. Through unification of communities, leaders, and advocates they are able to collectively promote education to improve public health outcomes, maintain public safety, and save taxpayer money. Because of their belief that American correctional institutions primarily house individuals with unmet mental health care needs, The Equitas Project prioritizes decriminalization of mental illness and improved practices for mental health services and increased resources. They promote programs for childhood development, mental health education, housing, true justice, reintegration resources, increased access to health care, employment services, public safety, corrections intervention, data collection, and policy change.
