The S.T.A.R.T. Project

The S.T.A.R.T. Project is a nonprofit organization committed to justice reform which addresses excessive sentencing in America's courts. They also advocate for better conditions for incarcerated individuals and greater access to resources during reentry into the community. Staff and volunteers believe strongly that the best method to disrupt the cycle of recidivism begins with reforming corrections away from punitive measures and toward rehabilitative efforts. The S.T.A.R.T. Project leadership includes individuals with direct experience inside the justice system to ensure that policies and advocacy are guided by authentic understanding of incarceration. They hope to help build an environment which provides better treatment for incarcerated individuals, more support for loved ones with one more incarcerated family members and those who are reentering the community after extended periods of incarceration. Many of those who work with The S.T.A.R.T. project are volunteers who understand the difficulties imposed by the justice system and want to support peers through that experience.
