University Beyond Bars is an organization that promotes the power of continuing education in disrupting the cycle of incarceration. Their vision is to shift the justice system from punitive incarceration to rehabilitative education, and to ensure that all individuals have the opportunities they need to make permanent life changes for themselves and the communities around them. University Beyond Bars is a nonprofit organization focused on uplifting incarcerated individuals in Washington State through access to higher education. They believe that incarcerated individuals stand a better chance at permanently disrupting the cycle of incarceration if they receive the education necessary to improve their economic status and gain access to permanent careers. Participants are able to complete coursework toward a degree or certificate, or they can begin with attending individual lectures.
