Federal public defender says Sheridan treats prisoners inhumanely, cites 7 deaths during pandemic

Federal prison in Sheridan's gym used for quarantine

A photo of the gymnasium at the federal prison in Sheridan, which was used to quarantine inmates who were ill with COVID-19. About 60 prisoners fit in the gym and initially slept on mats on the floor before they were later given cots, according to the federal public defender's office.

When Sheridan prisoner Ikaika Chung, 42, couldn’t walk to meals because his legs had become extremely swollen, other prisoners found an unclaimed wheelchair and shuttled him to the prison’s “chow” hall.

His health had progressively declined to a point where he became delirious, didn’t know the year and couldn’t distinguish between bedding and clothing, other inmates reported. A fellow prisoner emailed the federal public defender, begging to get Chung help.
