The ACLU of Hawai‘i has been protecting the civil rights and civil liberties of the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, and American Samoa. The ACLU of Hawai‘i works to protect the constitutional rights of people. They work for smart justice reforms, abortion access, gender equity, the right to privacy. They work with the courts, legislatures, and out in the community to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. They also work to protect fundamental freedoms based on a three-pronged approach: lobbying, litigation, and public education. They become involved in cases (either by representing a party or submitting a "friend of the court" brief) only when they can advance civil liberties through a change in law or policy. There is no charge for the time spent by the attorneys. They work on issues such as voting rights, criminal justice reform, immigrants’ rights, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ equality, or privacy. They do not take cases involving Family Law, Denial of government benefits, Landlord-tenant disputes, Criminal defense except a constitutional violation, Challenges to convictions or prison sentences, Complaints about a court-appointed attorney, Employment law except race, gender, ethnic background, religion, disability or any other basis that violates anti-discrimination statutes, Cases that are too old and occur outside of Hawai.
