The ACLU of Northern California (ACLUNorCal) works for civil liberties in California. With changing times, the ACLU has stamped out anti-immigrant laws around the country and challenged unlawful policing in immigrant communities in California. They work with communities to make sure people are informed about their rights. Their legislative advocates and staff collaborate with lawmakers and other organizations to draft bills, mobilize ACLU supporters, and work in partnership with impacted communities. The Criminal Justice Program of the ACLU of Northern California seek to reduce incarceration, criminalization, and police abuse by ending unjust and oppressive laws, policies, and practices that target and disproportionately harm marginalized communities. They advocate for transforming the criminal legal system into one that keeps communities safe and respects the dignity and rights of all who come into contact with it. ACLU NorCal works to end mass incarceration by building community capacity to hold DAs accountable and reduce DAs’ power to incarcerate and criminalize people. They fight to diminish the power, resources, and scale of law enforcement officers.
