ACLU South Carolina

ACLU of South Carolina is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization defending the rights to equality, liberty and justice of the people of South Carolina. ACLU defends the rights guaranteed to the accused, defendants, offenders and prisoners that are fundamental political rights that protect all Americans from governmental abuse of power. They protect the civil liberties guaranteed to all South Carolinians by the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Other issues that the ACLU of SC works on are Discrimination, Free Speech, Immigrants' rights, LGBTQ rights and police practices. They file lawsuits that will have an impact on people’s rights by setting a legal precedent or affecting the policies and actions of public officials. ACLU of SC provides direct legal representation to individuals and files amicus (friend-of-the-court) briefs addressing civil liberties issues in cases initiated by others. Their legal work is pro bono: free of charge. ACLU of SC is committed to building on the above-mentioned legacy through its work in the legislature, courts, and communities across South Carolina.
