ACLU Tennessee

The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee (ACLU-TN) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization and a freedom’s watchdog, challenging government abuse of rights and fighting for fairness in our laws and their enforcement. It is dedicated to translating the guarantees of the Bill of Rights into reality for all Tennesseans, moving Tennessee state by working to protect and promote justice and equality. ACLU-TN uses advocacy, legislative lobbying, litigation, public education and other strategies to protect and advance the rights of Tennesseans. They work proactively to pursue policies, practices and laws that protect Tennesseans against unfair and unequal treatment. ACLU-TN’s priority areas are pursuing significant reform in the criminal justice system, focusing on reducing mass incarceration, eliminating racial and economic disparities, and ensuring police accountability; protecting and expanding access to the ballot box; defending a woman’s right to comprehensive reproductive health care; protecting the guarantees of the First Amendment, including religious freedom and freedom of speech; safeguarding privacy rights against government surveillance; and advancing LGBTQ equality.
