Advocates for Restorative Communities in Savannah is a taskforce developed to assist individuals with reentry into the community. Mayor Van R. Johnson, II formed the organization with the expressed purpose of easing the transition for formerly incarcerated individuals returning to the Savannah, Georgia community after release. The taskforce prioritizes strategic partnerships and collaboration between individuals involved with the criminal justice system and community leaders to strategize the best ways to support returning individuals. Their mission is to effect legislative and policy changes which will help reduce recidivism rates in the community. The organization is also tasked with developing grant applications and securing funding to maintain community-based programs that offer essential services to formerly incarcerated individuals, including job development and placement, chemical dependence recovery programs and access to mental healthcare. They also work with community members to identify housing opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals. For more information about the ongoing work of the organization, visit their website.
