The Banks County Public Defender's Office is located in Jefferson, Georgia. With one Public Defender appointed by the Chief Superior Court Judge, this public defender's office serves the whole of Banks county. The office handles superior and supreme court cases. The mission of the Office of The Public Defender is to ensure that all accused indigent defendants are provided with their guaranteed fundamental constitutional rights by providing effective and zealous legal representation. The Public Defender’s office provides legal representation to indigent defendants in the Banks County who cannot pay for private counsel and who are at risk of losing their liberty if convicted. The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay and the right to a lawyer.
