Bronx District Attorney Conviction Integrity Bureau

Section Title

Bronx District Attorney Conviction Integrity Bureau

The Bronx District Attorney Conviction Integrity Review is a division of the Bronx District court system that investigates appeals of innocence. The goal of the bureau is to act as a dedicated office within the District Attorney's office focused on valid claims of injustice in the court system by providing due consideration to cases wherein individuals offer verifiable evidence that they are innocent, have been wrongfully convicted or have otherwise been subject to injustice as part of legal proceedings. Staff in the District Attorney's office look into these claims, including how plea offers might have affected the outcome of the case. They prioritize individuals based on how much of their sentence they have served. If claims are supported by credible evidence, staff may advise the District Attorney to reopen the case to determine whether or not claims of innocence are valid. Additionally, staff may recommend further action if they find evidence that the sentence applied to a defendant is unnecessarily harsh or excessive.
