Brooklyn Public Library Jail and Prison Services

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is a nonprofit organization that operates an independent library system for Brooklyn residents. Brooklyn Public Library's Outreach Services ensure that library activities and spaces are accessible to all. The library provides specialized assistance to immigrants, elderly adults, people experiencing homelessness, and those transitioning in and out of the criminal justice system. BPL also offers jail-based library services for people in NYC Department of Correction (DOC) facilities and specific activities and services for other incarcerated people. The library operates weekly mobile libraries at six DOC locations. Every week, librarians and volunteers visit these facilities to deliver books, periodicals, and newspapers to hundreds of incarcerated New Yorkers. BPL connects incarcerated New Yorkers to their families and communities through innovative programs and extensive resource access. In addition, Jail and Prison Services answer research questions from people in prisons throughout the country. For more information, contact Brooklyn Public Library directly.
