Broward County Conviction Review Unit

The Conviction Review Unit is a part of the Broward County District Attorney's office that considers claims of injustice. The purpose of the office is to affirm that justice is upheld in all cases, and to investigate substantiated claims to the contrary. Though not all appeals are considered by the Conviction Review Unit, staff do investigate claims of innocence that are backed by legal evidence to affirm an individual's claims. In addition, all proof must be new to the case. In other words, the unit cannot consider claims based on a reevaluation of evidence already included as part of the conviction. The unit also cannot investigate attempts to exonerate individuals after they pass. All claims considerd by the Conviction Review Unit must focus on currently incarcerated individuals. While the focus is on claims of innocence, the office will sometimes look into other claims of injustice when connected with clear evidence that might result in a summarily different outcome for the case in question.
