Cook County Conviction Integrity Unit

The Cook County Conviction Integrity Unit is a division of the District Attorney's office that looks into credible claims of innocence. The purpose of the Conviction Integrity Unit is to function in collaboration with the Cook County District Attorney's office as a dedicated investigatory team. They help to determine the reliability of claims of injustice by conducting an investigation into cases wherein convicted individuals offer legal evidence to verify their claims of innocence, offer concrete proof that they were wrongfully convicted or otherwise substantiate claims of injustice related to their involvement with the Cook County justice system. Staff in the division identify the truth behind all filed claims and consider whether or not plea bargaining had an impact on the outcome of the case. They prioritize their work based on evidence and the length of time incarcerated individuals have been behind bars. Whenever claims of innocence are confirmed through credible evidence, staff request that the District Attorney revisit the case and identify whether or not proof of innocence warrants further action.
