Eastern Michigan University’s Returning Citizen Fellows Program

The Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) Returning Citizen Fellows program (RCF) is a cohort structured student success and persistence program for individuals formerly incarcerated in and with the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). As a program, the RCF's primary intention is to provide Fellows with a support system within EMU and external to EMU to help navigate both the complexities of higher education and the challenges of reentry post-incarceration. The Fellows program is designed in tandem with MDOC Offender Success Model. The program aims to remove barriers to success for formerly incarcerated people who want a college education. It provides its cohort members a success coach, community work-study opportunities, helps navigate the financial aid process, and resources to help each cohort obtain a four-year degree from EMU. In addition, the program provides technical training, mentoring, academic support and opportunities for work-study. It's a collaboration among the university, the Ypsilanti-based reentry nonprofit A Brighter Way and the Michigan Department of Corrections' Offender Success program.
