Freedom Rides

Freedom Rides is a program developed to help reduce recidivism and empower individuals during and after incarceration. Their goal is to help incarcerated individuals build sustainable skills, obtain a driver's license and begin saving before release so that they have the best chance at success during reentry. Correctional facilities work directly with Freedom Rides using a multi-step process: Freedom Rides shares information about the program with social workers; social workers share work release opportunities with incarcerated individuals; social workers work with individuals to save a portion of work release for vehicle costs; individuals save work release payments during incarceration; individuals take possession of their vehicle after release. This model ensures that incarcerated individuals can work toward financial and social independence. By having the flexibility of personal transportation, individuals are able to participate in job interviews, educational opportunities and report to work regularly without relying on others. Freedom Rides believes that this approach helps to disrupt the cycle of incarceration and prepare individuals for self-sufficient living after release.
