Through the training and placement of service dogs, Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN) works to increase the independence of children and adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities, while providing opportunities for incarcerated individuals to learn positive interpersonal, life, and job skills to assist them with re-entry. They train and places service dogs with people in Indiana with physical or developmental disabilities and carefully screened incarcerated adults. In order to make the best matches, they evaluate and compare the temperament, motivations, and strengths of the dog with the lifestyle, personality, and assistance needs of the recipient. Wait time to be paired with a service dog is based on the needs of the client and the availability of the right dog to fit those needs. They can be placed at a hospital, a courtroom or school, ICAN dogs are equipped to provide the assistance and the tools necessary for the facility’s success. ICAN requires a non-refundable $75 application fee at the time you submit your application; a placement fee will be provided to you at the time your application is reviewed. Any additional costs associated with attending interviews and the mandatory Team Training session are your responsibility and include transportation to the Indianapolis facility, hotel, meals outside of training hours, and attendant care, if needed.
