Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office, Conviction integrity unit.

The Kankakee County State's Attorney's Office Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) 's mission is to ensure the public has confidence in the criminal justice system. The goal of the CIU is to ensure the integrity of a conviction, remedy a wrongful conviction, protect against innocent fraud and establish policies and procedures to strengthen the criminal justice system. The CIU considers two types of Claims: (1) claims of innocence; and (2) requests for review of resentencing. Additionally, there are some criteria you must meet to be eligible for review by the CIU. The conviction must have originated from Kankakee County. The convicted person must be a living person, there must be a claim of actual innocence, and there must be new and credible evidence not offered at trial. Requests and referrals for innocence reviews should be made in writing by either the defendant, a family member, the defendant's attorney, or an organization on the defendant's behalf.
