Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services

The Kansas State Board of Indigents' Defense Services (SBIDS) office is located in Topeka, KS. The board consists of five attorneys registered with the Kansas Supreme Court, one lawyer member from each county in the state and one member from each congressional district, except that two members belong to the first congressional district. The Death Penalty Defense Unit is also housed at the main SBIDS office which administers capital cases in Kansas. Their mission is to fulfill the constitutional promise of a zealous defense by providing their clients with team-based advocacy that champions their human dignity and achieves just outcomes on their behalf. The Legal Services Section of the Kansas State Board of Indigent Defense Office provides administrative supervision and support to the Public Defender, Contract Counsel, and Appointed Counsel Systems. The Legal Services Section responds to requests for defense services and recommends authorization of appropriate expenses for defense attorneys handling indigent cases. Legal Services is also responsible for coordinating and overseeing contracts for capital case litigation in conflict cases.
