Louisiana Appellate Project

The Louisiana Appellate Project (LAP) is a legal service provider based in Lousiana whose primary service is to provide appellate counsel. They provide appellate services for indigent defendants in all non-capital felony appeals in all Louisiana districts. Appellate work includes work in the appellate courts of Louisiana, and, when appropriate, filing writs to the Louisiana Supreme Court. It also includes cases appealed by the State, such as when a court declares a statute unconstitutional. By concentrating appellate work across all five Louisiana Circuit Courts to LAP attorneys, clients' appeals are handled by attorneys with the skills, experience and time to focus on the unique needs of appellate work. LAP accepts all appeals in felony cases from a district office where that office would have been appointed. This includes the cases wherein an out-of-time appeal is granted by the district court and those cases where the private counsel withdraws. It also includes felony-grade adjudications in juvenile cases. As an appellate unit, the project focuses on issues that may be raised by direct appeal and therefore, they do not deal with post-conviction relief in any form.
