Nevada State Public Defender

The Nevada State Public Defender's Office, located in Carson City, Nevada, is responsible for providing quality criminal defense services to indigent clients at all hearings and trials as appointed by the Justice Courts in Carson City and Storey County. The office has one Public Defender and other supporting staff whose mission is to assist Nevada counties in developing quality, equitable, and sustainable indigent defense systems that strengthen local communities and meet or exceed the state and federal constitutional guarantees that protect each of us. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning income, assets and debts for the person and the person's spouse if any. This information is generally provided to a court employee who reviews the financial information and recommends to the judge whether or not the person is eligible for government-paid counsel. Individuals determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to have competent legal representation. Public Defenders have an ethical responsibility to work for the best possible resolution of the case for the client. You should first contact the Nevada State Public Defender's Office for further assistance.
