New Jersey Office of the Corrections Ombudsperson

Section Title

New Jersey Office of the Corrections Ombudsperson

The New Jersey Office of the Corrections Ombudsperson is tasked with investigating claims of abuse and mistreatment. The purpose of the Ombudsperson is to protect all residents of New Jersey from violence, prejudice and maltreatment. Their oversight includes the conditions of state run facilities and claims from incarcerated individuals regarding violations of their fundamental rights. They also monitor community supervision programs such as transitional living communities and treatment centers, as well as the treatment of incarcerated individuals housed in the Special Treatment Unit. The office functions independently, allowing for fair and comprehensive oversight of the Department of Corrections. The Ombudsperson accepts inquiries from loved ones and incarcerated individuals. All claims of maltreatment are first investigated internally to determine the scope of the claim, potential danger to involved parties and the credibility of the claims. All credible complaints receive full investigations with targeted recommendations toward resolution. However, the Ombudsperson does not have the power to mandate changes regardless of its findings.
