Section Title

Office of the Alameda County District Attorney, René C. Davidson Courthouse, Conviction Integrity Unit

The Office of the Alameda County District Attorney, located in the René C. Davidson Courthouse, operates a Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU). This unit is under the District Attorney's Office, whose mission is to investigate wrongful convictions. In general, a Conviction Integrity Unit reexamines past convictions with questions over the defendant's guilt or innocence. In addition to ensuring people are serving prison sentences for crimes they committed, these offices also identify areas where improvement is needed to avoid future mistakes. Before a re-investigation of the case may begin, the following conditions must be met: The claimant must present new evidence of actual innocence capable of being investigated and potentially substantiated, case records needed for re-investigation of the claim must exist and be available for review, the claim must not be frivolous, and the claimant must agree to fully cooperate with the unit. For more information on who is eligible for review by the CIU, please contact them directly. Please click here to learn more about what a Conviction Integrity Unit is.
