Prison Journalism Project

Prison Journalism Project provides direct training and access to publication for incarcerated individuals inside America's prisons. The goal of the organization is to assist individuals inside the corrections system with visibility, and to give them agency over telling their stories. The Prison Journalism Project is a direct response to the public phenomenon of talking about incarcerated individuals without directly engaging them or giving them ownership over their own voices. The organization hopes that including incarcerated individuals in the public conversation around the American prison system will make their experiences more visible and transparent. Policymakers rarely engage with incarcerated individuals directly while discussing legislation that directly affects them. Prison Journalism Project wants to make it harder to ignore the authentic experiences and demands of incarcerated individuals, and to give incarcerated individuals a seat at the table in talks about criminal justice reform. Their J-School is specifically designed to provide education and guidance for incarcerated individuals to learn how to communicate their experiences in professional, published spaces.
