Section Title

Project Pooch, Inc.

Project Pooch is a community-based organization that provides education and job skills for incarcerated youth through working with dogs housed in the program's kennel. Project POOCH provides opportunities for youth in corrections to learn responsibility, patience, and compassion for all life by working with shelter dogs. The project pairs youths incarcerated at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon, with homeless shelter dogs. Youths (guided by professionals) learn to train the dogs, groom them, and help them get adopted. The dogs leave the program ready to be great pets, while their trainers re-enter the community with new job and personal skills and increased compassion and respect for all life. Both youth and dogs experience unconditional love, often for the first time. They learn positive reinforcement training, grooming, pet first aid, kennel management, photography, resume writing, and more. Some Project POOCH youth go on to become dog trainers, groomers, or veterinary technicians when they re-enter society. Others go on to get college degrees. Most importantly, they re-enter society with a sense of responsibility, patience, and compassion for all life.
