The Southern District of Mississippi, Federal Public Defender's Jackson office is the main public defender's office in Southern Mississippi. With one federal public defender and three assistant federal public defenders, the Southern District of Mississippi Federal Public Defender Jackson Office provides defense services in federal criminal cases and other covered matters to individuals who are financially unable to obtain representation. A person’s eligibility for our services is determined by the United States District Court. Legal representation is provided in criminal trials and criminal appeals as well as habeas corpus challenges to criminal convictions and sentences. The office is dedicated to ensuring that the right to effective assistance of counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution is upheld. Additionally, the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) is enforced in the Districts of Mississippi on behalf of individuals who are unable to afford counsel and other necessary defense services.
