The Stephenson County, IL Public Defender's Office represents a person accused of a crime, while the state's attorney represents the alleged crime victim. In addition, the trial judge appoints a public defender to defend the accused if they are financially unable to hire an attorney. With one Chief Public Defender and other supporting staff, the office provides services like the defense of persons charged with crimes and counseling and referrals. The roles and responsibilities of the Stephenson Public Defender's Office are to provide legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients, represent clients through criminal investigative proceedings, create a defense plan, conduct legal investigative research, interview the necessary clients and witnesses, work closely with clients, discuss relevant information and strategies. Public Defenders have an ethical responsibility to work for the best possible resolution of the case for the client.
