Suffolk County Integrity Review Bureau

Section Title

Suffolk County Integrity Review Bureau

The Suffolk County Integrity Review Bureau is a division of the Suffolk County court system that serves individuals claiming innocence. The purpose of the division is to act as a branch of the District Attorney's office centered on righting wrongs in the justice system by giving due attention to cases wherein individuals offer credible evidence that they are innocent, have been wrongfully convicted or are otherwise the victim of injustice. Staff in the District Attorney's office conduct investigations into the claims, including whether or not plea bargaining affected the outcome of the case. They prioritize individuals based on the amount of time served. Whenever claims are backed by credible evidence, staff may recommend that the District Attorney reopen the case to determine whether or not an innocent individual is incarcerated. Additionally, staff may recommend further action when they discover that the sentence applied to a defendant is unnecessarily harsh or excessive.
