Section Title

Wayne County Conviction Integrity Unit

The Wayne County Conviction Integrity Unit is a part of the Wayne County justice system that considers claims of innocence. The mission of the unit is to serve as a dedicated office within the District Attorney's office that looks into the validity of claims of injustice in the county by giving necessary consideration to cases wherein individuals provide hard evidence that they are innocent, have been wrongfully convicted or have otherwise encountered injustice as part of legal proceedings. Staff in the District Attorney's office investigate these claims, including whether or not plea bargaining affected the case. They look first into individuals who have served significant time. When claims are backed by confirmable evidence, staff may recommend that the District Attorney reopen the case to decide if claims of innocence are credible. Additionally, staff may encourage further action when they come across evidence that the sentence given to a defendant is unnecessarily harsh or excessive.
