Women’s Storybook Project of Texas

Women’s Storybook Project (WSP) is a women’s prison program that connects children with their incarcerated mothers through the joy of literature. This prison program helps incarcerated mothers maintain contact with and bring comfort to their children. WSP's primary goal is to reduce the rate of re-incarceration among incarcerated mothers by strengthening the mother-child connection through literature. They help these mothers record stories and messages of love for their children and then mail the recordings along with the books so the children can hear their mother’s voice and know that she is thinking of them. Once a month, for four months, they meet with volunteers on a Saturday to choose and record a book for each of their children between the ages of 0 and 14. These recordings provide a chance for children to hear their mother’s voice while they are away. Connecting the children and mothers helps provide a reason for the mothers to work hard not to return to prison.
