The Incarcerated Individuals Legal Assistance Project (ILAP) provides students an important opportunity to develop their practical legal skills while offering pro bono legal research to incarcerated men and women at the federal corrections facility in Terre Haute, Indiana and other prisons across the country. Incarcerated Individuals Legal Assistance Project is run by students and is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice. Working under the mentorship of an experienced appellate attorney, students assist incarcerated individuals on a number of legal issues, including direct appeals and ineffective assistance of counsel claims to tort claims and petitions for habeas corpus relief. During a usual year, students have the chance to collaborate with and interview clients during scheduled visits to the correctional facility in Terre Haute.
