The Webb County Public Defender's Office, located in Laredo, Texas, ensures legal representation to indigent defendants charged with a misdemeanor and felony crimes. The office comprises 15 attorneys, seven secretaries and two investigators. The Public Defender's office is responsible for representing adult defendants in both the district and county court-at-law. They deal with more than 125 felony and misdemeanor cases each month. In upholding the right of their clients, the attorneys work closely with both the District Attorney's office and law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the Public Defender's office provides legal representation to indigent defendants in Webb County who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay and the right to a lawyer.
