The Messages Project
The Messages Project is a nonprofit organization committed to serving the needs of children with one or more incarcerated parents. Staff and volunteers work with children to reunify and maintain strong relationships with parents who are incarcerated through mentorship and video messaging. Their mission is to reinforce the importance of healthy connections to parents and to aid children who struggle to maintain those connections while a parent is behind bars. They believe that this connection is essential to reducing generational trauma and disrupting intergenerational incarceration. The Messages Project also works hard to intervene with children before they experience significant educational issues that may increase the likelihood of juvenile incarceration, and to provide the support children need to develop healthy mental and emotional behaviors. Children record messages for their parents, and parents record themselves reading books to the children. This promotes both familial bonding and literacy skills.
