The Abbeville and Greenwood County Public Defender's Office is located in Greenwood, South Carolina. Abbeville and Greenwood counties are part of the Eighth Judicial Circuit in South Carolina. With one Circuit Public Defender, one Part-Time Assistant Public Defender in Abbeville County and one Chief Public Defender, three Public Defenders and one Part-Time Assistant Public Defender in the Greenwood County, they represent defendants in criminal court who are financially indigent. To qualify for an appointed attorney, you must first go through a screening process where you complete a financial affidavit. If you are eligible, an attorney will be appointed to represent you. Several factors are considered, including but not limited to the number of people in your household, whether you own any real estate, or have money in the bank etc. The office weighs all of these factors that screen applications to determine if you are indigent. The South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense (SCCID) oversees the working of the Abbeville and Greenwood County Offices. The SCCID is responsible for ensuring that all individuals are provided with indigent defense services in South Carolina and provide the highest quality of representation to their clients.
