Adopt An Inmate

Section Title

Adopt An Inmate

Adopt An Inmate is an organization that pairs willing participants in the outside world with currently incarcerated individuals. Their goal is to help facilitate a penpal relationship so that individuals inside corrections facilities feel a sense of connection with those outside the prison walls. Each volunteer begins by filling out and submitting an adoption survey, which staff use to carefully connect them with a currently incarcerated person that they believe would be a good match for mailed exchanges. Adopt An Inmate stresses that the work is volunteer based, and failure to keep in contact with an incarcerated individual could cause significant stress or emotional duress, so they ask that volunteers commit to ongoing correspondence. Though not required by the organization, they do offer ideas for how to enrich the correspondence relationship, such as sending books to the incarcerated person or talking with them on the phone from time to time.
