Alabama Prison Birth Project

Alabama Prison Birth Project is an organization developed to assist women who will give birth inside correctional facilities. Their mission is to ensure that newborns birthed to incarcerated women receive proper medical care and have an opportunity to develop a bond with their mothers. Staff and volunteers hope to prevent newborns from being separated from their mothers and to promote positive relationships between infants and their mothers despite the difficulties of caring for a newborn while incarcerated. Pregnant women and new mothers in Alabama correctional facilities may be eligible for doula support services, ground education and mentorship gatherings, access to nutritious foods and assistance maintaining a health milk supply for their babies. Incarcerated women also receive support maintaining their supply after their children exit the program to ensure that the baby continues to receive the benefits of breast milk throughout infant development.
