Alliance of Families For Justice
The Alliance of Families for Justice (AFJ) is a nonprofit organization based in New York City. AFJ seeks to eliminate mass incarceration by enabling the formally incarcerated and their families to utilize their collective influence on structural transformation. Their vision is to create a politically and personally powerful network of United families who have healed from trauma and turned their pain into power. In addition to its newly established internal Legal Support Unit, AFJ also uses a group of pro bono lawyers for those individuals and their families whose human rights get infringed when incarcerated in prisons. The organization also empowers and strengthens the voices of a selected group of family members and formerly incarcerated individuals through advocacy and communication training. It strives to restore full citizenship rights, including the right to vote, to all persons, regardless of criminal background or incarceration status, and to empower those who already have the right to vote to use that right.
