Description

The Champaign County Public Defender's Office is located in Urbana, Illinois. The office employs 14 lawyers, an investigator, two legal secretaries and other support staff specializing in criminal, traffic, juvenile, abuse/neglect, mental health commitment hearings and contempt matters. The Public Defender's Office provides legal services for indigent persons in Champaign County when appointed by the court. They are dedicated to the pursuit of liberty and justice for all. The office also represents parents in abuse and neglect matters and individuals subject to involuntary commitment or contempt proceedings. Public Defenders are responsible for all aspects of a case, including client interviews, investigation, witness review, legal research and writing, motion and trial practice; they do not do criminal appeals. In addition, Public Defenders do not handle civil cases such as orders of protection, landlord-tenant and small claims cases. When you appear in court for the first time, you need to fill out a Financial Affidavit. If the judge finds you cannot afford an attorney, then the Public Defender's Office will be appointed.
