Human Rights Defense Center

The Human Rights Defense Center is a registered nonprofit that advocates for the constitutional rights of incarcerated individuals. The organization defines incarceration as forced detention in federal or state prisons, county jails, detention centers, juvenile centers, reservation jails and military prisons. Staff work to ensure that individuals housed in any of these facilities receive their constitutionally guaranteed rights. They also actively work to divest from the private prison industry and advocate for publishers to have continued access to incarcerated individuals. Human Rights Defense Center is dedicated to transparency in the United States prison system, regularly filing public records requests and participating in litigation to ensure that records for facilities are available to the public under the Freedom of Information Act. Their goal is to protect incarcerated individuals through the combined efforts of government accountability and direct access for incarcerated individuals to share their experiences with the outside world.
